A Sense of Theatre charts the creation and history of Britain's National Theatre through the eyes of Richard Pilbrow, who is uniquely placed to tell this story. He was the lighting designer chosen by the National's founding artistic director, Laurence Olivier, to light its opening shows. He went on to be the theatre consultant for the National Theatre's new building on the south bank of the River Thames. From there he went on to create countless new theatres around the world.

In A Sense of Theatre Richard explores how the National Theatre came to be built, and the challenges and triumphs of the National's three auditoria.
